Learn how to test for a bad alternator

What is an alternator?

The charging systems main component is the alternator working with a serpentine belt and pulley while a engine is running, spins a set of magnets across a stators coil while the voltage regulator regulates the output current level to be used across the vehicles main systems and stored in the battery if needed.

How to check if alternator of other electrical part is bad:

  1. It is necessary to check your serpentine belt for wear, cracks and damage. If there are noises coming from the alternator, check the tension (loose OR tight) as it should be loose enough you can push the belt down with two fingers and see it flex the belt on the pulley.
  2. Check how old the battery is. Conditions of a car battery determine how long a battery can last like climate and load. Majority of auto parts store have testing systems that can test a battery under load to determine if you have a problem.
  3. Check for NO Cracks in old battery terminals. Check the battery terminal connections. Clean them with a wire brush. Replace old battery terminals.
  4. Clean the battery posts.
  5. Did you recently install an aftermarket alarm or stereo?
  6. Your radio stations programmed reset.
  7. Instead of a fast start, the cranking sounds really slow when turning the ignition key.
  8. Dash and warning lights are activated.
  9. With a multimeter set to dc volts and the ends connected to the battery terminals while the vehicle is running, the meter should display inbetween 12v and 13v. Turn the interior car heater on maximum and the alternator should still display an average of 12v while under load.
  10. When driving your lights go dim and than go very bright.
  11. Your headlights are dim while driving all the time.
  12. When you turn your heater on high speed with your lights on, the headlights look dim.
  13. Extreme temperature changes and cold weather can cause more wear and tear on the charging system.
  14. Your vehicle stops in the middle of the road while driving and when you turn the key nothing happens. This could mean your battery is drained and your alternator is not functioning.
